My Islip Property Tax Payment Is Late. Does the Penalty Keep Getting Worse?
If your payment is late, do not turn “I'm a little late” into “I'll deal with it eventually.” In Islip, the penalty does not stay the same.
January 10 Matters
The Town of Islip publishes this schedule: payments through January 10 have no late penalty; after January 10, 1%; after February 10, 2%; after March 10, 3%; after April 10, 4%; and May 11 through May 31, 5%.
What Happens After May 31?
After May 31, outstanding property taxes are no longer payable to the Town Receiver of Taxes. They become payable to the Suffolk County Comptroller. Delinquent taxes are subject to a 5% penalty plus interest at 1% per month calculated from February 1.
What If You Never Got the Bill?
A missing bill does not make the tax obligation disappear. This is especially important when a lender previously handled payments through escrow and a mortgage has been satisfied.
Conclusion
If your Islip payment is late, do not panic—but do not ignore it. The best time to deal with a late property-tax bill is as soon as you realize it is late.
